Fois Na Mara

Labour weekend walkabout - 26th Oct 2015

Whilst our wonderful guests came to see Neil Diamond (I'm sorry but I can't help singing...... Sweet Caroline... da da da.....) performing at the Forsyth Barr Stadium, in Dunedin over the weekend, we took the opportunity of the very fine weather to go off to discover some of our hidden gems.

We started with a good walk up Mount Cargill to get some fantastic views of Dunedin city, Blueskin Bay, the Otago Peninsula, Flagstaff and Swampy to name but a few.  A very rewarding morning tea was had at the summit.  We've done this walk a few times but I always forget how stunning the view is.  Well worth the sweat!

Monday took us on a new adventure, Aramoana.  I'm ashamed to say I've never been before.  No justifiable reason, other than if I'm looking for a great quiet beach with the chance to spot some wildlife then I'll always go to Allan's Beach just near Portobello.  But it's always good to discover new places.....
The drive to Aramoana only took us 40 minutes, and passing through the very cool Port Chalmers, quaint Careys Bay and gorgeous Deborah and Hamilton bays along the way made this a great place to visit.
We weren't disappointed with what we saw at the end of the road.  Quiet and unassuming, but with something magical....... this may have to be my new place to go...

Spring has arrived in Dunedin! - 22nd Aug 2015

Opening bud of the Magnolia tree Today is the 1st day that we feel that Spring is really only round the corner.

Winter has been a touch cold but today I looked out of our front window to see the glorious site of our Magnolia tree just starting to flower.

Once in full bloom, it's one of the 1st sites you will see as you come up the driveway to Fois Na Mara, and is of jaw dropping beauty.

And, of course, the backdrop to the tree is the stunning water of the Otago Harbour, which today had a mirror like quality.  So peaceful to sit out on the deck of Fois Na Mara and enjoy the view.

Vogel Street Kitchen - 2nd Apr 2015

Dunedin Street Art I wanted to have a bit of a rave about a very cool place to visit in Dunedin.

But first I want to paint a picture for you..........

Staying at Fois Na Mara, you can wake up to the peaceful birdsong.   Enjoy a relaxing breakfast of locally made sausages, bacon and eggs from our chickens, or choose our Continental option and have home toasted muesli, yoghurt, muffins and fruit.

After spending the morning on the Otago Peninsula why not head into town for a look at the murals that have sprung up around town by Dunedin Street Art

Finish up by enjoying coffee and lunch (fabulous wood fired pizza or gorgeous sandwiches) at Vogel Street Kitchen.  I love this place so much.  It opened late 2014 and I don't get to go there enough.  Over the quieter winter months I think I'll be making a bee-line down there.  Great atmosphere and superb food.  Enough said......

Dunedin Street Art - 30th Nov 2014

We have been amazed watching the murals appear around Dunedin.  The talent that these guys have is dumbfounding.  How lucky are we that we get to have these fantastic artists come and paint beautiful pictures on our walls?
I have actually changed my daily travel route into the city to go past a few of these great paintings!
If you are coming to Dunedin for a holiday then set aside some time to go and have a look at some of them.
Check out what Tourism Dunedin had to say about it all.

Fabulous Cumberland sausages! - 16th Nov 2014

Fabulous Cumberland sausages!

Award winning sausage maker

Here, at Fois Na Mara, we take our breakfasts seriously.  We provide a choice of a 'Cook Your Own' basket, or 'Continental'.  The continental basket contains yummy delights such as homemade muesli, muffins, yoghurt, bread, homemade jams, juice and fruit.  The 'Cook Your Own' option contains sausages and bacon (shoulder or streaky) from a local award winning butcher (more on that later..), eggs from our cheeky chickens, bread, homemade jams, juice and fruit.  As the title suggests we give our customers the basket containing these treasures in the evening and guests can then have a relaxing, uninterrupted start to their day, preparing breakfast at their leisure.

We get lots of great feedback about both of our basket options but when guests choose the 'Cook Your Own' breakfast they often leave great feedback about the amazing sausages.  I have tried many sausages in Dunedin but these are by far the best.  I get our local butcher 'Deep Creek Deli' - check them out here - to make lovely big juicy Cumberland sausages which, when cooked to perfection, set our customers up for the days activities on the Otago Peninsula really well.

Jetstar Hot Fares - 30th Sep 2014

Iconic Flemish style Dunedin Railway Station

Dunedin is not just a place for overseas tourists to visit!

At Fois Na Mara we get lots of overseas tourists.  We LOVE this as we get to meet people from all sorts of interesting places, and show off our wonderful part of the world.
However, we would also like to have more New Zealand visitors and show them that little old Dunedin is a real gem.
Have you always wanted to visit the Otago Peninsula but just thought it was too expensive to get here?  Well, check out the great prices on Jetstar flights to Dunedin here

Dunedin is a winner! - 12th Sep 2014

Dunedin view from the Otago Peninsula

We have always known at Fois Na Mara how beautiful Dunedin is, but here is the actual proof in print.

Dunedin has been made officially 'the most beautiful city in the country'.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful organisation noted Dunedin was "a stand-out winner".

It was impressed by the extent of the work undertaken in Dunedin to inspire and empower the local community to care for and enhance its city, under the direction of Dunedin City Council Keep Dunedin Beautiful coordinator Darlene Thomson.
