Otago Farmers Market - 3rd May 2014

Saturday mornings are for the Otago Farmers Market.

What better way to start a sunny autumn Saturday morning than at the Otago Farmers Market in Dunedin.
Situated right next door to the iconic Flemish style Railway Station it is always packed to the seams and buzzing.
There are so many great food sellers, with oodles of fresh produce. You can check out the full list of vendors on the home page of their website but suffice to say I ALWAYS come away with some yummy food.  Today I picked up some enormous leeks so creamy leeks are on the menu for us this week!
Not only do I pick up some fresh local meat, fish, vegetables or bread for the week but it is always great to have a spot of morning tea at the market too.  The freshly made crêpes are a winner, especially with their homemade chocolate spread oozing throughout.
If you are on holiday in Dunedin and staying at Fois Na Mara, a trip to the Otago Farmers market on a Saturday is a great start to your day.  You can soak up the atmosphere and pick up some great food to bring back to your accommodation.  In the evening cook up your meal in your kitchenette whilst enjoying a cheeky Central Otago wine and enjoying the amazing view from your deck over the Otago harbour.

University of Otago Graduations - 11th Apr 2014

Otago University logo for graduation

University of Otago Graduation 2014

May is filled with graduations in Dunedin.  I love the fact that Dunedin is a huge university city.  The students make the place come alive.

My favourite part about each of the Otago graduation ceremonies is watching all the granduands marching down George Street in the centre of town towards the Town Hall, accompanied by bagpipers and drummers.  It brings a huge lump to my throat.

Once the students graduate the world awaits them, such exciting times for one and all!!

Cool Cafes in Dunedin and on the Otago Peninsula - 12th Mar 2014

Coffee at Fois Na Mara

Summer is here!

Finally......in March...... we are getting some great weather!

We've had some great sunny days lately and it's motivated me to write about a couple of really cool cafes that I love around Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula.  I have a somewhat 'strong' coffee addiction and as I love to supply my guests with freshly ground, locally roasted coffee to enjoy, I thought I would talk about MY favourite cafes.  There are also a couple of new ones that are on my 'bucket' list.....
- The Perc (Lower Stuart Street): Beautiful coffee and my favourite treat is their cinnamon pinwheels.  Get there early though or you'll miss out!
- The Bay (Macandrew Bay): Great setting and right next to a lovely safe beach to take the kids for a swim.
- Brew (Musselburgh): A real hidden gem amongst the Musselburgh shops for great coffee and delicious savoury scones.
- The Good Oil (George Street): You just can't go wrong here.
- Glenfalloch Gardens Cafe (Otago Peninsula): I can't wait to try out their new 'Green Electric Bikes' - what a fantastic way to explore the Otago Peninsula.
- Cadbury's Interactive Cafe (next to Cadbury World): newly opened in Feb 2014 I'll be hot footing it down here soon!

These are just a few of my stock standard coffee places.  But to be honest, sometimes the best place to enjoy your coffee is right here at Fois Na Mara.

Little Blue Penguins - 15th Jan 2014

Fois Na Mara visit the Little Blue Penguins

Dunedin pulled out a beautiful day yesterday so I decided to make the most of the gorgeous weather and do something on the Otago Peninsula.

I wanted to do an activity I hadn't done before so I took a trip to the Royal Albatross Centre at Taiaroa head at dusk and went on the guided trip down to Pilots Beach to see the Little Blue Penguins.

The Little Blue Penguin is the world's smallest penguin.  After a day at sea, the penguins congregate in groups known as "rafts" not far offshore where they often can be heard vocalising - usually short, loud squawks. At dusk penguins come ashore and make their way to their nests where they feed their chicks or roost.

I got some great photos of the sun setting over Dunedin city while we waited for dusk. There was to be no flash photography of the penguins so I cannot share with you what I saw. To be honest I was in total awe of the wee creatures and glad to not be stuck behind a camera.  We saw around 150 Little Blue Penguins, which came in over a period of an hour.  It was such a magical sight.
My only suggestion is is that you make a trip to the Otago Peninsula, stay at Fois Na Mara and go and see the penguins yourselves.  For more information click here

Ride the Rhythm is back! - 1st Jan 2014

Ride the Rhythm Fois Na Mara is excited about the unique and fantastic mix of live entertainment that will be on at the Forsyth Barr Stadium on Sat 1st Feb 2014.

In 2013 Ride the Rhythm’s sensational equestrian performances, drama, and suspense had the crowd riveted. In 2014 the tension will be equally electrifying. AND we will be taking our dancing shoes because Bjorn Again’s action-packed world-class show has people leaping out of their seats singing and dancing right from the very beginning.

Endorsed by ABBA, Bjorn Again are the most successful tribute band of all time having delighted audiences worldwide for over 24 years. No one can resist being carried away by ABBA’s phenomenal collection of pop hits - such as SOS, Fernando, Take a Chance on Me, Knowing Me Knowing You, Mama Mia, Waterloo, Money Money Money and of course Dancing Queen.

We won't be missing the party at Forsyth Bar Stadium.
